Breakout Session

VMware vCloud Based Computer Labs

Track:  Virtualization

Breakout III

NJIT’s Introduction to System Administration is designed to give students experience in the administration of Linux systems. To provide students with a hands-on experience, access to the root user of the Linux system is required. Previously, in order to provide this access securely, a specialized lab of 20 seats was designed and maintained by
the course coordinator.  Additionally, to prevent inadvertent network interference, the lab was deployed isolated from the NJIT network.

This semester VMware vCloud is employed to provide students with a self-service virtual environment in which students can have root access to virtual Linux computers. This talk will present our experience with this deployment, including viewpoints from both infrastructure administrators and the instructor.
