Distance Education Affinity Group:  Best Practices for Online Learning – Embracing our Students Educational Needs Through Technology

This panel discussion will involve DEAG members, Faculty and Distance Ed Administrators focusing on Distance Learning at their respective Institutions by sharing their experiences and ideas regarding critical parameters of student success in online education.  Panelists will share their knowledge on various topics such as retention and assessment efforts, best practices in online education, technology tools, Open Educational Resources, ADA Compliance, Universal Design and delivery methods of online content. Based on the presentation of these rich experiences and sharing of ideas, a summary report on distance learning/digital resources and ideas will be generated and shared with participants

Dr. Leigh Bello-de Castro is the Associate Dean of Online and Learning Resource Technologies at Essex County College located in Newark, NJ.  She has been with the College since 1998 and has served in numerous capacities, including the Assistant Dean of Academic Foundations which included the development and oversight of the College’s Learning Center and Center for Academic Foundations, High School Initiatives, Summer Bridge and various grant initiatives.  Dr. Bello-de Castro currently serves as the Associate Dean of Online and Learning Resources where she is responsible for Evening and Weekend Degree Programs, Media Production & Technology, The MLK Library which is being transformed into an Information Commons, and the development and implementation of the College’s Online Course and Degree Initiative.  She is also a long term adjunct in the Division of Business teaching the College Success Seminar, Introduction to Business, Organizational Behavior and Management.
Dr. Bello-de Castro currently sits on various Advisory Boards including the Cengage Higher Education Advisory Board, Pearson CITE and the Link Systems International (LSI) NetTutor Campus Advisory Board which contribute to the use, promotion and advocacy of the use of technology in Higher Education.

Dr. Bello-de Castro is a graduate of Seton Hall University with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice (1992), a Master’s degree in Administration/Supervision from Montclair State University (2002) and earned her Ph. D. from Capella University in Higher Education Leadership (2010).
